Verna Mae Benning, age 91, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at her residence.
Verna was born the daughter of Homer Locke, Sr., and Viola (LeClare) Locke on March 19, 1930, in Utica, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Carl Asmus "Pete" Benning on May 18, 1947, in Clarion, Iowa. He preceded her in death on August 14, 2008. Verna and Pete made their home in Chillicothe after moving from Meadville, Missouri, in 1988. Prior to living in Meadville, they lived in Halfway, Missouri, and Cambridge, Iowa. She was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Chillicothe, Missouri, where she was active in UMW. Verna was also a member of the Busy Bee Club in Meadville. She enjoyed fishing trips and traveling with her husband in their camper. Verna also enjoyed crafts, ceramics, crossword puzzles, and caring for her family.
Survivors include one son, Kevin Benning and wife Cherryl of Slater, Iowa; one daughter, Karla Kinzle and husband Jerald of Chillicothe, Missouri; five grandchildren, Michelle Kinzle of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jennifer Novak of Wahoo, Nebraska, Jessica Lusk of Newton, Iowa, Cassandra Laas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Amanda Peterson of Stratford, Iowa; ten great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pete; one great grandson, Dominique Meador; two sisters, Rosella Smith and Zelpha Wood; four brothers, Homer, Jr., Alfred, Charles, and Robert Locke.
Graveside services will be held at Utica Cemetery, Utica, Missouri, on Monday, December 20, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. There is no scheduled visitation. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Sunday, December 19, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Utica Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O.
