Vern S. Allen Vern Allen, age 89, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2014, at his residence. Vern was born the son of Arron Mott and Elgie Etta (Noble) Allen on June 12, 1925 in rural Utica north of Apple Orchard Hill. Vern served in the United States Marines from 1943 until 1946 during World War II. He was united in marriage to Palma "Jean" Prewitt on December 4, 1949 in Independence, Missouri. She survives of the home. Vern worked as a farmer all his life and also worked as a rural mail carrier in Chula, Missouri, for 32 years. Vern said he only called three places home, rural Utica, rural Chillicothe, and where ever the Marines were, usually on foot all over the Pacific and wound up in Japan. Vern was a board member for the Chula Coop, Cream Ridge Township, and the Chula Fire Department at which time the new fire building was built. He was a lifelong member of the Vern R. Glick American Legion Post 25 and the VFW Roy L Burkette Post 858 serving as commander three times. At the time Vern served as commander the Veterans Memorial was placed on the Livingston County Courthouse grounds and worked with Bill Murray to Petition to rename Highway 36 to the VFW Memorial Highway. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, MANN, Missouri Rural Letter Carriers Association, Livingston County Steam and Gas Association, and the Lathrop Antique Car, Gas, and Steam Association. He also served as a school board member for Chula R-3 School District. Survivors include his wife Palma Jean Allen of the home; two sons Vern Allen Jr. and wife Dee of Mooresville, Missouri, and Timmy Allen and wife Cherie of Trenton, Missouri; one daughter Charlotte Gunter and husband Carl "Buck" of Chula, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Shelly Allred of Mooresville, Missouri, Melody Corrales of Chillicothe, Missouri, Caleb Bowman of Kansas City, Missouri, Charles Burkhardt of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Brady Bentley of Chula, Missouri, Chelsey Dean of St. Joseph, Missouri, Foster Allen of Lexington, Missouri, Grace Allen of Trenton, Missouri, Melissa Bowes of Avalon, Missouri, Michelle Ireland of Laredo, Missouri, and Melody Typaldos of Chillicothe, Missouri; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many new welcomed additions. He was preceded in death by his parents; Aaron Mott and Elgie Etta (Noble) Allen; four brothers, Rollie, Vollie, Harley, and Charley; one infant sister; and one grandson Jamie Allen. Funeral services will be held at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Saturday, November 29, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m. A scheduled family visitation will be held at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Chillicothe, Missouri.
