Phyllis B. Harkness, age 80, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at Brazos Tower at Bayou Manor, Houston, Texas.
Phyllis was born the daughter of Dorsey and Ruth (Wilson) Thompson on March 22, 1940, in Kirksville, Missouri. She was a 1958 graduate of Kirksville High School. After graduation, Phyllis attended Truman State University, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1962. She was united in marriage to Dr. James Harkness on June 3, 1962, in Kirksville, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 24, 1988. Phyllis worked as an elementary school teacher in Davenport, Iowa. She then worked as the office manager of her husband's medical practice for many years. Phyllis also worked as the children's librarian at the Livingston County Library for several years. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Chillicothe, Missouri, where she served on the Vestry.
Survivors include two sons, James A. (Jay) Harkness and wife Hanan of Houston, Texas, and Michael W. Harkness of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, J.T. Harkness and Matthew Harkness; one sister, Janet Rigdon and husband Larry of Houston, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; and one sister, Dorsie Dowd.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Chillicothe, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. James Harkness Scholarship Fund at Hedrick Medical Center and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Missouri 64601.
