Mitzi Mary Martens, age 71, a resident of Hamilton, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri.
Mitzi was born the daughter of C.E “Pepper” and Wanda (Appelgate) Martens, on June 8, 1953. She had a thoroughly happy early childhood growing up in Meadville and was loved by her brother Steve from the first time he set eyes on her. She was a 1971 graduate of Marshalltown, Iowa. Mitzi attended college in Kirksville and worked as a telephone operator in Chillicothe.
Mitzi was the mother to George William, Joshua Steven and Abigail Faye. Helping her children grow into kind and thoughtful adults was the greatest joy of her life. She was a teacher’s aide at Bishop Hogan Memorial School, where her children were students. Mitzi was very proud that she had raised those amazing children and of their accomplishments. She was privileged to spend happy time with them as young adults. Her heart was broken when she lost her son, Joshua and then her beautiful daughter, Abigail. Eventually, she was drawn back to Missouri to spend time near her son, George.
She is survived by one son, George Quinn IV of Chillicothe, Missouri; one brother, Steve Martens and wife JoAnna, of Fargo, North Dakota; and her much loved and loyal little white dog, Jack. She was preceded in death by her C.E. Martens, mother, Wanda Berhow and step-father, James Berhow; one son, Joshua Steven Quinn; one daughter, Abigail Faye Quinn Boies; grandparents; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A cremation was held. A memorial gathering of family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Missouri 64601.
