Mary Johnson

Mary L. Johnson Mary Johnson, age 92, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Carmel Hills Healthcare, Independence, Missouri. Mary was born the daughter of Talton Eugene and Cassie Belle (Sneed) Rogers on November 18, 1920, in Centralia, Missouri. Mary graduated from Douglas High School, Columbia, Missouri, in 1938. She then studied cosmetology under Madam C.J. Walker at Poro College, Chicago, Illinois, where she graduated in 1939. She moved to Chillicothe, Missouri, in 1947 to care for Mr. Thomas Banks. Mary was united in marriage to Benjamin Johnson on February 2, 1952, in Chillicothe, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1983. Mary worked as a Vocational Instructor for the Missouri Department of Corrections for thirty-three years. She was a long-time member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chillicothe, Missouri. She was also a member of Darcus Mission Circle, Progressive Art and Study Club since 1929, and Eastern Star Queen of the South #18, Past Matron. Survivors include two sons, Benjamin "Ardell" Johnson, and wife Rosie of San Jose, California, and Gary Johnson, of Chillicothe, Missouri; one daughter, Carla Mason, and husband Gregory of Lee's Summit, Missouri; five grandchildren, Ben Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, and Wyatt Johnson of San Jose, California, Derrick Smith of Strongsville, Ohio, and Westley Smith of Lee's Summit, Missouri; and one great-grandson Zamir Gray of Jefferson City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Benjamin; one brother James Rogers; and one sister Martha Wright; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. A scheduled family visitation will be held at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Saturday, July 13, 2013, one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Friday, July 9, 2013, from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m. Burial will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Chillicothe, Missouri.
