Margery Lavaun (Sallee) Hawk
Margery Lavaun Hawk, age 100, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri, peacefully left our earthly world on Friday, September 27, 2024, at Morningside Center, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Margery was born in Meadville, Missouri, on September 26, 1924, the eldest child of Lee Lavaun Sallee and Martha Elizabeth (Cooper) Sallee. She was a 1942 graduate of Wheeling High School, Wheeling, Missouri. After graduation, Margery traveled by train to Washington D.C. to work for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. She returned home to attend Chillicothe Business College, graduating with a degree in business. She then re-entered her work career for Production Credit Association as a secretary at the Chillicothe office for many years, Solar Gas Company as accounts receivable and Irvinbilt Construction Company as their employee payroll clerk where she retired. After retirement, Margery worked part-time at Green Hills Community Action Agency.
Margery was a member of the First Christian Church, Chillicothe, Missouri, where she was a past deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and belonged to the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and member of the Peppy Promenaders Square Dance Club. Margery believed in the importance of agriculture and life skills and served as a 4-H Leader during the years her children were in 4-H. Dedicated to her children’s education, Margery volunteered as a room mother through the PTA and helped with the organization and implementation of grade school parties. Throughout the years, Margery showed her support by attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s events.
Margery was an avid lover of nature. She enjoyed working in her flower garden. With a cup of coffee and sitting on her deck, she would watch the birds that came to visit. She liked watching Judge Judy, Wheel of Fortune, the KC Chiefs and Royals, and on Saturday nights, she would watch her music shows of Danny O’Donnell, Larry’s Country Diner, and especially Molly B. Polka. She treasured visits with her family and did not want you to leave. She always looked forward to attending surrounding fairs as well as the Missouri State Fair. Margery was a meticulous seamstress making many of her daughters’ clothes and wardrobes for their Barbie dolls.
Being the matriarch of a large family, Margery is survived by two daughters, Susan (Darrell) Skipper of Chillicothe, Missouri and Mary Hopkins of Lathrop, Missouri; two grandchildren, Laura (Dan) Innes of Papillion, Nebraska and Ryan (Katie) Skipper of O’Fallon, Missouri; four great-grandchildren, Carrigan and Katherine Innes and Finnegan and Wren Skipper; two step-grandsons, Ed (Shauna) Hopkins of Excelsior Springs, Missouri and Dale (Jan) Hopkins of Kansas City, Missouri; two step-great-granddaughters, Alicia (Brent) Miller of Kearney, Missouri and Kelsey (Kyle) McCann of Polo, Missouri; three step-great-great-grandchildren, Kenadie and Cooper Miller and Rutland McCann; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family. Margery was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret (Vernie) Minor and Opal (Bobby) Phillips; one brother and sister-in-law, Loyle (Linde) Sallee; and one son-in-law, Ralph Hopkins.
