John J. Summers John J. Summers, 93, a former resident of Hale, Missouri, passed away on January 18, 2014, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center, Tonganoxie, Kansas. John was born the son of Joseph and Edna (Kimber) Summers on September 27, 1920 in Dawn, Missouri. He was a 1937 graduate of Hale High School. He was united in marriage to Helen "Louise" Sewell on August 20, 1943 in Chillicothe, Missouri. She preceded him in death on March 8, 2011. They made their home in Hale, Missouri. From 1945 until 1951, John worked for Swinney Chevrolet in Hale, Missouri. In 1951 John was appointed as Post Master in Hale for the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Hale Baptist Church, Hale, Missouri, where he served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, a Deacon, and also as Treasurer. Survivors include one son, Sammy Summers and wife Patty of Bonner Springs, Kansas; one grandson, Kyle Summers of Lawrence, Kansas; one brother, Willard Summers and wife Mary Jane of Knoxville, Tennessee; two sisters, Ruth Towner of Phoenix, Arizona, and Wilberta Reimer and husband Willard of Bonner Springs, Kansas; and one sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Wohlgemuth of Chillicothe, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Louise; three sisters, Louise Bittiker, Margaret Humble, and Lucille Garber; and two brothers, Clarence Summers and Everett Summers. Funeral services will be held at the Lindley Funeral Home, Hale, Missouri, on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. A scheduled family visitation will be held at the Lindley Funeral Home, Hale, Missouri, on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home, Hale, Missouri, on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m. Burial will be held at Hale Memorial Gardens, Hale, Missouri.
