Ethel Elizabeth (Brandt) Flair Lyzen

June 16, 1913 — August 28, 2017

Ethel Elizabeth (Brandt) Flair Lyzen Ethel passed into Eternity on Monday, August 28, 2017, at the age of 104, at Indian Hills-A Stonebridge Community, Chillicothe, Missouri. Ethel was born to Frank and Lydia (Colson) Brandt on June 16, 1913, in Knob Noster, Missouri. At the age of 16, she began working at a shoe factory where she met her first love, John E. Flair. They were married on January 31, 1936, and they made their home in Higginsville, Missouri. To this union, two daughters were born: Johnna Lou and Joy Ann. On February 22, 1950, they bought a farm in Hale, Missouri, and moved the family. After 41 years of marriage, John preceded her in death on June 25, 1977. In November of 1985, she married Daniel Andrew Lyzen. They enjoyed 27 years of companionship until he preceded her in death on December 30, 2012. She accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ in her life in July of 1949 and loved serving Him until the end of her life. She loved to share the story of how the Gospel came to her family, and she always encouraged her children and grandchildren to keep praying. Besides being a farmwife and homemaker, she worked at the Boss Glove Factory in Chillicothe for over 22 years. After her retirement, she made cloth dolls, teddy bears and over 150 quilts which her family treasures. One of her favorite pastimes was solving crossword puzzles, which kept her mind agile. She loved to whistle and often whistled the hymns while cooking, quilting, or just rocking in her chair. She enjoyed playing Chinese Checkers, Boggle, and Rack-o with her grandkids and great-grandkids. Her family remembers fondly her homemade pies and her chicken noodle soup. Her quick wit and contagious chuckle will continue to ring in her family's heart. She resided on the farm in Hale until she was 97 years old. In April of 2011, Ethel moved in with her daughter, Johnna, who cared for her tenderly until May of 2013. Due to a fall, she became a resident of Indian Hills Nursing Home, still under the watchful eye of her daughter, until her death. She was adored by many of the nursing staff who loved her spunk and enjoyed listening to her tell stories. There were many others throughout her life that considered her 'Grandma'.  She was a unique and classy lady, and those who knew her easily became quite fond of her. Ethel is survived by her two daughters, Johnna Lou Townsend of Chillicothe, MO and Joy Ann (LaMont) Townsend, of Scottsbluff, NE; 8 grandchildren: Janna (Keith) Grieser, Junee' Townsend, JaRon (Tammy) Townsend, Jaala (Duane) Nelson, Brian (Jean) Townsend, Brent (Janet) Townsend, Kyann (Art) Smith, and Kyle (Julia) Townsend; 32 great-grandchildren: Lars (Megan) Grieser, Sadie (James) Cloyd, Sara, John and Steven Schupbach, McKenna and Treyton Townsend, Laura, Shaylee, Jory, Landon, and Jadyn Nelson, Tyla (Levi) Hostetler, Misty Townsend, Chrisney (Nekoda) McConnell, Kyra, Carlin, and Bryson Townsend, Layne (Addie) Townsend, Rusty (Shayna) Townsend, Dayna (Clinton) Wilson, Rebecca, Lizbeth, Clayten, and Timothy Smith, Kailey, Keynan, Levi, Travor, Ellie, Brock, and Behrett Townsend, and 8 great-great-grandchildren: Jackson Grieser, Abigail, Fayah, and Maysa Cloyd, Koby and Westin Hostetler, and Brooke and Luke Townsend.
