Dorothy Evelyn Byrd Hughes, age 96, a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Morningside Center, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Dorothy was born the daughter of Roy Oliver and Okie (Smith) Byrd, in Chillicothe, Missouri, on October 20, 1928. She was a graduate of Dawn High School. She was united in marriage to Harold David Hughes on October 31, 1948, in Chillicothe, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 12, 2018.
Dorothy graduated nursing school at Garden City Community College, in Garden City, Kansas. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Hedrick Medical Center and Ray County Memorial Hospital, where she retired at the age of 72. Dorothy was a member of Dawn Federated Church, Dawn, Missouri. She was a devoted farm wife. Her hobbies were reading and journaling and she enjoyed sewing, drawing and painting. Dorothy had an affinity for birds and barns, and also enjoyed plants and flowers.
Survivors include three sons, Douglas Hughes and wife Laura of Dawn, Missouri, Morgan Hughes and wife Diana of Angleton, Texas, and Arthur Hughes of Dawn, Missouri; two daughters, Alice Hughes Puett and husband Dennis Lykins of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Marjorie Hughes and husband Rick Yount of Holt, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren, David Hughes, Matthew Hughes, Megan Neis, Kieara Hughes, Morgan Bronson, Spencer Puett, Sarah Puett, Lisa Whitlow, Amy Reed, Katie Hooker, Hannah Briner, Jon Hughes, Courtney Yount and Tyler Yount; and twenty-three great grandchildren and one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; a newborn son; and four siblings.
Funeral services will be held at the Dawn Federated Church, Dawn, Missouri, on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. A scheduled family visitation will be held at the Dawn Federated Church, Dawn, Missouri, on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. one hour prior to service time. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. Burial will be held at the Welsh Cemetery, Dawn, Missouri, immediately following the service.
