Donald Henry Winkie

Donald Henry Winkie, age 71, a resident of Breckenridge, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Donald was born in Rochester, New York on September, 14, 1939, the son of Adelbert and Marie "Mary" (De Mallie) Winkie. On June 13, 1961 he was married to Barbara Jean Henry in Rochester, New York. Donald joined the United States Army on March 28, 1957, where he served until his retirement and honorable discharge on December 27, 1983. He was a Nuclear Weapons Technician and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He received the Vietnam Veterans of America-New Mexico Council's Profile of Courage Award on February 29, 1992. In 1993 he moved to the area from New Mexico. He purchased an 80 acre farm near Breckenridge, Missouri, where he successfully raised meat goats. He Graduated from Missouri Western State University in December of 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. He was currently employed at Missouri Western State University, where he assisted students with disabilities as an Adaptive Technology Technician. Donald was a loyal and dedicated member of the Chillicothe branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He acted as an advocate for students with disabilities and non-traditional students. He was a member of the American Legion in Las Cruces, New Mexico and the VFW on Las Cruces, New Mexico. He enjoyed reading books and spending time with his family. Survivors include his mother Marie "Mary" Winkie of Rochester, New York; wife Barbara of the home; sons Robert Whitcomb (Diane) of Hannibal, New York, Donald W. Winkie (Amy) of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, Robb E. Winkie (Julie) of Kansas City, Missouri, Michael A. Winkie (Teresa) of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and Wade K. Winkie (Kathy) of Kansas City, Missouri; daughters, Ellen M. Thompson (Matthew) of Independence, Missouri, Elizabeth A. Reed (Ryan) of Jefferson, City, Missouri, and Kristina L. Aitchison (Josiah) of Cameron, Missouri; brothers James Winkie of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Larry Winkie (Laurie) of Rochester, New York; 32 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, son Donald H. Winkie, Jr, and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Family visitation will be held at Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Friday, April 29, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friends may call at Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri on Friday from 12 noon until 9:00 p.m. Burial will be held at the Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Breckenridge, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to Missouri Western State University Non-Traditional Student Fund and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, PO Box 47, Chillicothe, MO 64640 Arrangements are under the direction of Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri.
