Dohn Frank Gilliland, age 89, a lifelong resident of Ludlow, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Indian Hills – A Stonebridge Community, Chillicothe, Missouri.
Dohn was born the son of Frank and Lillian (Hooker) Gilliland on September 27, 1935, in Ludlow, Missouri. He was a graduate of Breckenridge High School in 1953. On June 20, 1957, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Fern Smith in Dawn, Missouri. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1987. Dohn married Joyce Ann Miller in Ludlow, Missouri, on December 15, 1991.
Dohn farmed his whole life and received the Missouri Century Farm Designation in 2004. He served in many community organizations including the Livingston County Zoning Board, Southwest R-1 Booster Club President and member and the Ludlow Lions Club, serving as President and member. Dohn was a member of the Ludlow Community Church. He was well respected in the community.
Dohn enjoyed staying busy. He collected coins, worked in his yard, golfed and enjoyed watching the songbirds and hummingbirds at his feeders. Dohn enjoyed hunting quail and training his hunting dogs. He enjoyed family gatherings with his siblings and his own family. He liked to have his kids and grandkids crank the handle on his homemade ice cream. He loved to play his guitar and harmonica with his siblings and for his grandkids. Dohn enjoyed taking drives in his truck to look at his farms and to catch up with his sons in the fields and his daughter at her home.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Miller Gilliland of the home; two sons, Carl (Pete) Gilliland and wife, Rhonda, of Ludlow, Missouri, and John Gilliland and wife, Carrie, of Ludlow, Missouri; one daughter, Sheri Dawkins and husband, Randy, of Ludlow, Missouri; eight grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; one brother, Dave Gilliland of Ludlow, Missouri; and four sister, Mina Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska, Marilyn Carson of St. Joseph, Missouri, Nola Zeltwanger of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Janice Swanson of St. Joseph, Missouri. Dohn was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn Smith Gilliland; two brothers, Richard Gilliland and Pat Gilliland; and three sisters, Carol Lamb, Grace Smith, and Nina Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at Ludlow Community Church, Ludlow, Missouri, on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. There is no scheduled visitation. Friends may call at Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri, on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. Burial will be held at Monroe Cemetery, Ludlow, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ludlow Community Church and/or Monroe Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O.
