Denny "Payton" Woods
Denny "Payton" Woods, age 89, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2019, in Warrensburg, Missouri, two days prior to his 90th birthday. He was a former resident of Laredo, Trenton, Chillicothe, Sunrise Beach, and Warrensburg, Missouri.
Payton was born on April 13, 1929, in Laredo, Missouri, to Oscar and Nettie (Brown) Woods. He attended Marion Center School. He was a 1947 graduate of Laredo High School, where he played basketball. Payton was united in marriage to Patsy Le (Peterie) Woods on November 13, 1949, his high school sweetheart, in Kansas City, Missouri. She preceded him in death on November 20, 2012. In 1950, he worked at Sealrights and was involved in the 1950 flood of west bottoms of Kansas City. He also worked at CW Douglas Garage and later sold Moorman Feeds. Payton retired from Donaldson's in Chillicothe in 1991, after over twenty-five years of employment. During the years he worked, he also spent time farming and caring for livestock. He was very active in the Laredo community. Some of his activities included being Scoutmaster of the Laredo Boy Scout Troop 198 and had the Mic-O-Say name Racing River, served as President of the Laredo Fair Association, was a leader in the Busy Bee 4-H club and was involved with the Laredo Fire Department. He has continued being active in Scouting for many years. He was an avid supporter of anything in which the children were involved. He enjoyed country music, square dancing, fishing, deer hunting, and travel. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored Papa Payton and he adored them.
He is survived by his two children; his daughter, Pam Sager and husband Dean of Trenton, Missouri; his son, Phillip Woods and wife Jeanne of Warrensburg, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Sarah Sager and David Sager of Trenton, Missouri, Anne Davies and husband Aaron of Savannah, Missouri, Martha Sager and husband Leonard Rodriguez of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Shawn Woods of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Shannon Dorzweiler and husband Scott of Liberty, Missouri, and Steven Woods and wife Ashley of Jefferson City, Missouri; sixteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pat, and two sisters, Ellen Spencer and Margaret Housh.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. at Stucker Cemetery, Laredo, Missouri. Friends may call at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Missouri on Saturday, April 13, 2019, from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, April 14, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Burial will be held at Stucker Cemetery, Laredo, Missouri.
