Charles "Chuck" E. Haney A Chillicothe resident and current Mayor of Chillicothe, Charles "Chuck" E. Haney, 81, passed away Saturday, May 05, 2018, at Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, Missouri. Chuck was born the son of Troy and Mildred (Pardoner) Haney on April 6, 1937, in Chillicothe, Missouri. He was a 1955 graduate of Chillicothe High School. He attended college at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri. On October 17, 1959, he married the love of his life, Rita (Lawler) Haney, at the Leopolis Catholic Church in Wheeling, Missouri. To this union two children, Kathy and Kevin, were born. They were married for 41 years before Rita preceded him in death on December 11, 2000. He spent most of his adult life as a journalist, as he was active in both print and radio. He worked for KCHI in Chillicothe and for KFEQ radio and KQTV in St. Joseph, Missouri. He became a general assignment reporter for the Constitution -Tribune in 1964. He later became the sports editor, editorial page editor, news editor and managing editor. He became the publisher in 1980 until 1998. He worked for the Constitution-Tribune for a total of 34 years. Chuck accumulated several accolades over the years. He was named president of the Northwest Missouri Press Association and the Missouri Press Association, president of the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, and Board of Directors of the Missouri Press Association Foundation. In 2007, Chuck was elected Mayor of Chillicothe, Missouri. He served his community with due diligence until his death. He served six terms in office. He was the "Voice of the Hornets" for many years as he announced Chillicothe High School sporting events. After the basketball and football games, he would return to the newspaper office to head up a call-in radio show that was broadcast live on KMZU. Coaches from throughout the area would call in scores and talk about the games. Haney wrote a weekly column, "On the Street" for the Constitution - Tribune. Even after leaving the C-T in 1998, he continued writing the column which appeared continuously in other publications. In 2008, Haney was inducted into the Missouri Press Association Hall of Fame for having made exemplary contribution to the newspaper industry over a number of years having displayed strong community involvement. He spent day and night promoting the town he loved. He was well respected and will be missed by all. Although he was the Mayor and a great husband and father, his favorite times were spent being a grandpa to his grandkids and great- grandkids. Watching the kids play basketball, soccer and which ever sport was popular at the time, was a definite favorite past time of Chuck. Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Carlton, Chillicothe, Missouri; one son, Kevin Haney and wife Kyra, Chillicothe, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Courtnie Cranmer , and husband Ryan, Chillicothe, Jackson P. Haney, Chillicothe, Haili Teeter, Columbia, Carly Carlton, Chillicothe, Kyler Ireland, Chillicothe, Colin Carlton, Chillicothe, Kyrstyn Haney, Chillicothe; five great-grandchildren, Kaylynn Cranmer, Kaden Cranmer, Tyra Cranmer, Jaydin Kohl and Max Cranmer, all of Chillicothe, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, his parents, and a sister Mary Margaret St. John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Columban's Catholic Church in Chillicothe, Missouri, Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 5:30 PM . Friends may call on Monday, May 7, 2018, 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM . A Parish Rosary will be held at 5:30 PM on Monday, May 7, 2018, at Lindley Funeral Home with a visitation to follow starting at 6:00 PM. Burial will be at the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Wheeling, Missouri.
